While safari-style 911 builds have become incredibly popular in recent years, few if any shops do a better job of these ruggedized, rally-ready transformations as Southern California’s Russell Built Fabrication, which previously set the standard for a Dakar-grade 911 build with its 1991 911 Baja Prototype #1. Due to the ample publicity and attention that Russell Built Fab’s Baja 911 has generated, the shop has now been prompted to debut an all-new safari-style kit for late ‘80s/early ‘90s 964-gen Porsche 911s.
Christened the Safari Sportsman, this transformative kit bestows the 964 donor with serious off-roading capabilities thanks to an enormous slew of parts and upgrades. This includes a bespoke lifted and reinforced suspension setup with KING SHOCKS coil-overs, billet tie rods, strut mounts, and sway bar links, new brakes with billet hats, a custom rear subframe, lengthened 300m axles, 7075 billet aluminum hub carriers, a hydraulic hand-brake conversion, signature BAJA wheels wrapped in Toyo Open country A/T tires, and a Turbo 911-style body kit protected via two front and rear skid plates, fender liners, and custom tube bumpers fore and aft.
The Safari Sportsman comes with a fully-rebuilt 310-hp 3.6-liter engine with a MOTEC ECU, though the flat-six can be upgraded to a 350-hp 3.8L mill or a 400-hp 4.0L engine — both of which boast a custom full exhaust, independent throttle bodies, and a custom intake. RBF is also offering a host of additional upgrades including Stage 1 and 2 transmission upgrades, an available onboard air compressor, hood-mounted rally light pods in carbon shells, Baja Designs bumper-mounted fog lights in the shop’s exclusive “turbo cooler duct” housing, a low-profile carbon roof rack, a powder-coated and upholstered roll-cage, an up-specced oil-cooler, and a strut-brace and accessory carrier combo, just to name a few.
The Porsche 964 Safari Sportsman Kit by Russell Built Fabrication is available now, with a price starting from $135,000 that includes installation, painting, and tuning — but does not include the 964 donor.
